Serving Others--Where is the Source of Joy?
Thank you Sam so much for your thoughtful words! Moved me indeed to hear your supportive voice here on my blog.
To me, the essence of coaching is the service of "what is", the core reality of us all and this universe. Alignment with that is true joy. Anything else is a half-truth, a cleverly disguised strategic attempt at being empathic more for our benefit. Though I'd love to say altruism is a core universal trait, at the end of the day, even service providers (especially so actually) fall victim to one of the most predictable parts of humanity:
We truly will self-protect our own self interests and only go "outside the box" here if on some level 1) there is something in it for us and/or 2) we are values-aligned to thing requested of us that may or may not serve us.
To me, the best service providers are those who are aware of this and are truly self-less, at least to the best ability that their biochemistry and nature allows them to be
For me, when i am not coaching, i attempt to get centered to this "what is-ness" by daily mass, meditation, and yes, writing and playing music. To me the creative spirit when done well asks us to get out of the way of ourselves and let the artform be...for it always is greater then us.
This is a great lesson for all coaches and helpers to understand, for we are most vulnerable to the slippery slope here...
